The Dominican Republic House is a personal project and was designed based on a family friend’s ideal home. She requires a relatively small house, with two floors, that is built of concrete construction, the most widely used construction method in the Caribbean.
It is also to feature few windows, but at least two large windows to be used in the master bedroom and living room area. She wanted at minimum two bedrooms, a small office space, and the usual rooms necessary for a house. The design solution was pretty straight forward. The house is divided into two sections, the upstairs, where the bedrooms are, and downstairs where the kitchen, studio, bathroom, and living room are. The master bedroom features a stone wall for extra thermal massing. The living room and the kitchen also carry this feature, but have built up earth to maximize geothermal and thermal massing in these areas. The house is about 1,100 sq. ft.
